In tenth grade my English teacher had us write a letter to future selves, one we wouldn’t open until in 2050 (name some more quintessential tenth grade English teacher type shit I’ll wait). I only remember writing one thing, which was in response to a question that was something like, “What do you want to be?”

“Loved,” I wrote.

I guess most people would think it’s more romantic to not know when they’re getting proposed to. For it to be a total surprise. Part of me thinks that, too, and even now I’m tempted to write this like I didn’t sit there while my mom handed my BSB, quite ceremoniously and with tears, my late grandmother’s diamond ring (which was passed to my mom, her youngest daughter, who passed it to me, her youngest daughter), that I didn’t go with him on multiple trips to the local jeweler to redesign said ring, that we didn’t decide together it would feel especially exciting to be engaged before our trip to see my baby nephew later in May, that just a couple weeks ago I didn’t ask him how many more gel manicures I needed to get and he didn’t say, mentally crunching the numbers, “one more.”
